CEB denies reports of signature of agreement with CT Power
The Central Electricity Board (CEB) officially denied this Thursday
persistent rumours that it will sign an agreement with CT Power this
Friday 27 December pertaining to buying electricity produced by the
thermal power station. The rumours, spread by environment protection
activists, blew up when Jeff Lingaya and Stéphane Palmyre, two
well-known ‘eco-activists’ were arrested Wednesday evening while
attempting to spray a graffiti on the walls of the Parliament. The two
men were kept in police custody after their Court appearance this
Thursday under a provisional charge of damaging Government property by
band. In a statement broadcast on local radio, Shyam Thanoo, director
general of the CEB, said the rumours were unfounded and that there is
no intention from the CEB to sign such an agreement. The information
caused a huge stir, especially since the National Energy Commission,
set up under the aegis of the Prime Minister’s Office, made
recommendations against the setting up of a coal power station as
proposed by the promoters of CT Power.
